Status Update: a few jobs, a few new contacts, no workouts

I haven’t blogged in a few days and for that I apologize, but I figured I couldn’t go off into the weekend without something so here I am.

This week I focused more on contacts over applying to jobs.  It was a good start, an idea I might explore further next week.  The logic is that if every 20 jobs I apply to online yields one contact then if I flip my application model around and seek out new contacts instead of new jobs, it would be the equivalent of hundreds of jobs.  Did you follow that?  Sorry the math major in me sometimes makes things more complicated then they need to be.

So this week I had lunch at the Viacom lodge with a friend of a friend who could potentially pass my resume on to the right people.  The lodge was pretty cool, it’s kind of like high school cafeteria meets big time mover and shaker restaurant.  The food was cheap, healthy, and quick, the trifecta of the perfect lunch as far as I am concerned.  The conversation was pleasant.  Sometimes these lunches can be rather awkward since a friend of a friend is usually the closest connection you get, but this one pleasantly wasn’t.

All in all it was certainly worth doing.  I doubt it will turn into a job or even an interview, but it certainly increases the odds of that happening over my usual MO of internet black holes.  And maybe for next week I’ll do an even bigger push.  This week I got in touch with 4 friends of friends, one of which turned into a lunch.  Maybe next week I’ll shoot for getting 3 lunches/coffees/phone chats.  I’ll keep you all posted on the progress.

Honestly, the lack of opportunities this week has been a bit deflating and totally exhausting.  And the last two weeks had been so good.  Oh well…
